Festa del Giglio
The mission of The Massapequa Giglio Association and Paranza Lupo is to ensure our 1,600 year old religious Festival of dancing the Giglio in honor of San Paolino di Nola is sustained in accordance with the traditions passed on to us by our ancestors as we strive to continue with the same spirit for future generations.
ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION
The major highlight of our Feast is the Dancing of the Giglio on Sunday afternoon, the last day of the Feast. The Children’s Giglio on the Saturday of the feast has also become a highlight fo the local community. Your support will help us continue to expand the feast in the years to come.
BUILDING THE GIGLIO
The Giglio is a large, intricately decorated structure made of wood and/or metal and adorned with elaborate floral arrangements. The Giglio structure is typically 70 feet tall and weighs close to 3 tons, the band and equipment add another 3000 pounds and is carried by 120 men.
LIFTING THE GIGLIO
The Giglio Lift or “Dance of the Giglio” is the ceremonial process of lifting and carrying the structure through the festival. It’s a significant cultural tradition that involves teamwork, strength, and devotion, highlighting the importance of communal participation in the celebration.
